German Colony Hotel

Client: Nitsba Holdings Ltd Location: Haifa, Israel Date: 2023 Status: under construction

The German Colony was established in 1868 as the first modern neighborhood in Haifa, Israel. Its main road Ben-Gurion Boulevard, which leads up to the Bahai Gardens, was nominated in 2008 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since this beautiful area has been preserved and renewed it has become Haifa’s main leisure district.

The firm designed a 300-room hotel, repurposed from a former bus terminal plot. The design aimed to incorporate the historic context of the neighborhood into the large building. The façade is broken apart by three floor separate stone buildings with tiled roofs which face the Colony streets, taking note from the historic characteristics. The taller parts of the façade, which reach up to 6 floors high, are set behind them. In between, an inner courtyard presents the main open space in the hotel.

Finishes accordingly complement and contrast materials, with stone cladding set around white aluminum panels and glass curtain walls in the inner and back façades.
